Anthony’s Journey from the U.S. Navy to Northwell
At Northwell, we recognize that veterans and active members of the military can bring a wealth of knowledge and skills into the workplace. Anthony Castro, a U.S. Navy veteran, is making a meaningful impact as a security officer at Northwell’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
In his role, Anthony ensures the safety of our patients, visitors, and staff members. He conducts regular patrols, monitors video cameras, enforces strict access protocols, verifies identification, and responds when needed. Beyond safety and security duties, Anthony strives to provide exceptional customer service, guiding patients and visitors, and helping to maintain a welcoming environment.
Anthony served for eight years in the U.S. Navy as an aviation ordnance man. He was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, during which he worked in fast-paced and high-pressure environments, collaborating with his crew to ensure mission readiness. He gained valuable logistical experience by processing and tracking inventory. He served in active duty until 2006 and continued in the U.S. Navy Reserves for two more years.
After transitioning from the military to civilian life, he worked as a security officer for almost 15 years. Anthony says his Navy experience continues to shape the way he serves and leads in his role today. The discipline, leadership, and tactical skills he built in the Navy translate directly to his work at Northwell. “De-escalation, situational awareness, teamwork, and adaptability have become cornerstones of my approach to safety and patient care,” shared Anthony.
Since joining Northwell in 2022 as a security officer, Anthony adds that the camaraderie of all coworkers has made his career transition easier. He focuses on his one mission: keeping patients, visitors and team members safe. He is especially energized by work that has an impact and collaboration with team members. He also shares how he has benefited from Northwell’s VALOR BERG (Veterans and Allies Liaisons of Reintegration Business Employee Resource Group). “The best part of being here is the genuine respect and support Northwell shows to service members across the organization. It is a safe and fun place to work with great resources, forums for like-minded veterans to stay connected, benefits, a pension, and room for advancement.”
