Anthony Quintana’s path to a career in medicine was far from conventional and marked by his service in the United States Marine Corps when he made the transition back into civilian life. Explore Anthony’s remarkable journey to healthcare, starting with his military service and commitment to supporting fellow veterans, and learn why he pivoted from an accounting career to his current role as a critical care physician assistant in the Tele-ICU at Northwell Health.
Shortly after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, Anthony made the courageous decision to enlist in the United States Marine Corps. During his service, he rose to the rank of Sergeant (E-5) in which his military experience instilled in him a strong sense of discipline, values, leadership and resilience. After completing his military service, Anthony pursued higher education, earning an associate’s degree in accounting. Just after starting his career in accounting, he soon realized accounting was not the right role for him. He felt it was so far removed from what he did in the military, and he needed to look toward a path in something else where the skills he learned in the Marine Corps were more transferrable. He began to volunteer at a nearby veteran hospital and this experience would ultimately set the stage for opening doors toward a new career path within a totally different industry.
While volunteering at a nearby veteran hospital, he crossed paths with one of his future mentors, a physician assistant and army veteran who would play a pivotal role in reshaping Anthony’s career aspirations from accounting to a completely new path. His mentor recognized that Anthony was then driven by a desire to make a difference and to help others, so he encouraged him to pursue higher education in healthcare. When he graduated with a dual degree, earning a bachelor’s in healthcare studies and a master’s in physician assistant studies, Anthony was equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the next step of his career journey into healthcare.
Anthony joined Northwell as a physician assistant in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) before working at another hospital in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) with additional coverage in the Coronary Care Unit. His experiences in these critical care settings helped hone his clinical skills. Today in his current role as a critical care physician assistant in the Tele-ICU at Northwell, Anthony uses telehealth platforms to manage critically ill patients across the entire Northwell system. His ability to adapt to new technologies and provide high-quality care virtually, highlights his commitment to delivering exceptional patient care.
“Northwell has a system of support that allows myself and others like me to succeed,” says Anthony, “Northwell recognizes veterans for their service and commitment to their country and prioritizes resources to give us the support we need.” Anthony completed programs like “Mentoring and Professionalism in Training” and is currently a group leader for a new mentorship program cohort. He’s also nearing completion of the “Essentials of Leadership Course” and was nominated for our 2024 LeadNEXT leadership development program. Reflecting on the organization’s commitment to reinvest in its employees, Anthony plans to pursue an MBA in healthcare analytics with financial assistance through Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program at Hofstra University. In addition to his professional growth, Anthony is an active member of the organization “PAs in Virtual Medicine and Telemedicine,” a caucus of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. His involvement emphasizes his dedication to raising awareness about the vital roles physician assistants play in telemedicine.
Anthony’s story serves as an inspiration for all who seek to transition from the military to a fulfilling civilian career. His journey is a testament to his commitment to service and his dedication to making a difference. His experiences in the military and his educational and professional growth at Northwell reflect his resilience and passion for helping others, particularly fellow veterans. Northwell’s support and commitment to its employees have assisted Anthony to thrive and make a meaningful impact in his healthcare career. “I would advise any veteran to continue to serve their community with Northwell, where you know you can make a difference.”

At Northwell Health, the goal of our Advanced Clinical Provider (ACP) Mentorship Program is to enhance the skills development process for nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) during their first few months as a new team member. Created four years ago with only 20 mentors and mentees in total — today, the program has more than quadrupled in size with participants developing clinical and non-clinical skills, essential to a successful career in healthcare management at Northwell.
Four team members from this year’s program, Annelisa Tucker (PA), Anthony Santos (PA), Jessica Darby (NP) and Noelia MaGowan (NP), shared their experiences about how valuable it was to participate in the ACP Mentorship Program at Northwell.
Annelisa Tucker – Mentee
Annelisa is an ENT (ear, nose and throat) physician assistant at Northwell Health. Before the start of the program, Annelisa shared that she was excited to connect with someone who can encourage her development and advise her through the beginning of her career. “I hope to not only learn ways in which I can advocate for myself in my current role, but also to learn how to advocate for the PA profession.” After completing the ACP Mentorship Program, she was paired with a senior PA in the same specialty and shared that being a part of this program exceeded her expectations and was instrumental for her career growth.
“I appreciate my mentor’s guidance and support throughout the onboarding process at Northwell. She was open to sharing stories from various challenges that she has faced throughout her career and how she managed to navigate and overcome them. I hope to apply her advice if I am faced with similar scenarios.” What surprised Annelisa the most about the program was seeing how many senior ACPs wanted to invest in the development of junior ACPs within the organization. “It was inspiring to see how many mentors wanted to give back and foster the career development of newer ACPs. I hope to become a mentor one day and pay it forward to future mentees at Northwell.”
Anthony Santos – Mentor
Anthony is the senior physician assistant in otolaryngology at Glen Cove Hospital. Excited to have been a part of this program, he expressed, “this program is truly wonderful. It is a learning experience for both the mentor and mentee as we build our professional network, support and guidance. As once being a new employee myself, I can understand how tough it can be to join a new health system and not know the ins and outs of my responsibilities or have the direction to build my career. The relationship between me and my mentee is built to last and does not end after the program ends.”
Jessica Darby – Mentor/Program Coordinator
Jessica is a senior nurse practitioner (NP) care navigator with Northwell Health Solutions and the ‘Follow Your Heart’ team, which visits open heart patients at home after they have been discharged from the hospital. Before the start of the program, Jessica shared, “I want to help ease the transition for anyone entering our health system as an ACP.” After first completing the program as a mentor, she found it was valuable for her career growth within Northwell and wanted to continue to give back.
“In my role as a mentor/program coordinator, I am able to help fellow ACPs navigate their mentor/mentee relationship,” she shared. “It was rewarding to witness how dedicated the team of mentors are about ensuring a positive introduction for our new team members.”
Noelia MaGowan – Mentee
As a pediatric nurse practitioner for Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Noelia believes initiatives like the ACP Mentorship Program increases confidence, enhances leadership skills and provides networking opportunities. “Being a part of a mentorship program with a network of experienced professionals at Northwell builds valuable relationships, allows newer team members to gain exposure to different types of healthcare environments and grants us access to resources that enhance our professional growth.”
Mentorship is one of the many ways Northwell can provide an opportunity for team members to grow in their career and create their own success. Become a Health Raiser as an Advanced Clinical Provider at Northwell Health.

Ashley Vargas joined Northwell Health and began her professional career in 2021 as an EMT at the Center for Emergency Medical Services in New Hyde Park, NY, and two years later in 2023 became a paramedic at the same location.
Today, as a community paramedic, Ashley works directly with physicians to treat patients who choose care at home instead of in the emergency department. By communicating ailments and any changes in the patient’s condition with physicians, Ashley can provide care at home.
This form of community paramedicine is offered to patients in Northwell’s House Calls program. Ashley reduces the strain placed on ambulances and emergency departments by addressing healthcare needs in the comfort of patients’ homes. For example, if there is an urgent change in a patient’s condition, such as COVID-19 or the flu, Ashley is able to treat the patient in their homes. However, there are times when patients may require diagnostic testing with advanced equipment, and we will communicate with the patient, their family, and a physician, on a decision on whether or not to be transported to the hospital.
“My position as a paramedic can be very rewarding. I find joy in delivering proactive healthcare. This role gives me the opportunity to build trust and enduring bonds with my patients, gaining deeper insights into their unique requirements. I can make a meaningful impact in our community,” said Ashley.
Ashley believes Northwell set her up for success from the beginning by offering a comprehensive training program, covering emergency scenarios and how to use the latest equipment. Ashley was first attracted to Northwell since the organization has the largest hospital-based ambulance service in the region. With Northwell’s reputation of excellence, patient-centered approach and collaborative culture, Ashley knew the health system was the ideal place for her to contribute to a team while pursuing her career goals.
Proud of the work she does for Northwell, Ashley is a passionate team member who is glad she became a paramedic and was able to join a company like Northwell that supports her personal career growth and goals. When she first transitioned from her role as EMT to her role as paramedic, Ashley’s team, especially her team leader was very supportive and made sure she was prepared for this change and had access to all the resources she could need.
As a paramedic, Ashley is required to have a current paramedic certification in New York State, plus specialized certifications as needed. Whereas she previously needed a current Emergency Medical Technician certificate in New York state to practice as an EMT. Northwell supported Ashley through this process, and she was able to successfully grow in her career and meet her career goals.
In addition, EMTs operate an ambulance and transport their patients to their destination, with the patient’s safety as their top priority. Whereas paramedics conduct medical evaluations and provide care to patients before they are transported to the hospital. They also maintain equipment and make sure patients are transported in a safe manner.
“I have always taken advantage of each opportunity to grow. My team leader has been helpful in navigating me toward the right direction in my career,” said Ashley.
Another way Ashley has developed in her career at Northwell is by participating in some of the monthly employee workshops. These workshops included the Employee and Family Assistance Program, which provides information on Northwell’s free counseling program. This led Ashley to join a stress management workshop and learn how to recognize and manage the stressors in her life.
When asked if she could offer any advice to those looking to start a career in emergency medical services, Ashley encourages anyone starting their career to prioritize their patients’ well-being along with their own health. She also stresses seeking opportunities for improvement and learning from past experiences.

Join us as we celebrate inclusivity, connection and our commitment to building a better world during Filipino American History Month. This year, with a theme of “Recognizing 125 Years of Philippine-American History,” it is a time we can reflect on the past and celebrate the future with our community.
This October, we are featuring two Northwell team members who are part of our Asian Bridges Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) and sharing their journeys and career experience as Filipino Americans. Originally attracted to Northwell for its many opportunities, focus on innovation, and supportive culture – these individuals both believe Northwell’s commitment to team member development through resources like our BERGs and continuing education has been essential to their career growth.
Christine Mejilla assists in the management of many surgical programs and oversees surgical residencies and fellowships, including the Colon and Rectal Fellowship and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency and Fellowship. As a first generation Filipino and a daughter of immigrant parents, Christine’s path to healthcare was most influenced by her mother, a retired registered dietitian. Her time with Northwell began in 2013 as a GME training program administrator in podiatry at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills (LIJFH). Six years later, she transitioned to North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) as a GME training program administrator for the department of surgery. At the end of 2022, she was promoted to her current role and was recently accepted into Northwell’s Mentorship Experience Program.
Over her 10 years here, Christine has witnessed the organization’s growth and achievements – believing that Northwell has been instrumental in her career growth through access to various programs, including our BERGs, tuition reimbursement toward her master’s degree in health administration and participating in the Management Accelerator and Executive Leadership program, a mentorship program designed in partnership with McKinsey and Company.
Christine highlights the importance of our BERGs in fostering diversity, education, and inclusion in the workplace. “Being a member of the Asian Bridges BERG helped provide me with opportunities to participate in the Management Accelerator and Executive Leadership program and make valuable networking connections within our organization.”
Mark Dagan began his career as a registered nurse and transitioned to nursing informatics due to his passion for technology, data and its impact on healthcare in our communities. In his current role as a lead clinical informatics specialist, Mark now assists in evaluating remote monitoring solutions and leads inpatient-focused implementation projects to generate clinical data for organization-wide research.
As a member of the Asian Bridges BERG, Mark participates in community events, receives access to professional development programs, and networks and builds relationships with others across Northwell. “Being part of the Asian BERG has allowed me to meet and learn from other team members who share a similar cultural background and be open to expanding my network with those who have gone through similar experiences.”
At Northwell, we’re proud to showcase the rich stories and experiences of Northwell team members, like Christine and Mark, who share in our mission to advance diversity, inclusion and health equity for all.

At Northwell Health, our team members know a career in pharmacy means having the support to grow and make an impact on the health and wellbeing of our communities. Northwell’s Vivo Health Pharmacy provides specialized pharmacy services for our patients, and our Vivo pharmacy team members, like Talha, Tara and Sophia, share what makes their pharmacy career meaningful at Northwell Health.
Talha Akhtar, PharmD, CSP, Supervisor, Mail Order Pharmacy
Talha was always attracted to the values, commitments and educational support Northwell offers. Spending 15 years in the retail pharmacy industry, he had colleagues and peers that worked for Northwell who told him about how wonderful the environment was – so he knew he wanted to see it for himself. After joining Northwell in 2020 as a staff pharmacist with Vivo Health Pharmacy, Talha quickly recognized that this was a place he could grow his Truly Ambitious career.
Talha was promoted to supervising pharmacist at Vivo Mail Order in 2022 and now holds a pharmacist license in 20 states, so he can give approval for the pharmacy to get licensed and ship medications to multiple states. He is currently pursuing an MBA in Strategic Healthcare Management at Hofstra University and is benefitting from Northwell’s tuition assistance program. “There is something different about working here,” he shared. “Leadership truly cares and wants to make a positive impact on the business and on the frontline team.”
Tara Hutter-Irving, Pharmacy Manager
As a pharmacy manager at Vivo Health Pharmacy, Tara oversees the operations and staff at four of our outpatient Vivo Health Pharmacy locations inside our hospitals. In addition to managing resources needed by the pharmacy department teams to operate efficiently, the most important part of Tara’s job is providing leadership to the team and communicating strategies to achieve department goals.
Tara was always interested in a career at Northwell because of its continuity of care across all specialties — coming together with the common goal of providing the best experience for the patients. “Our providers are one team with the same focused goal — patient care,” shares Tara. “I love that pharmacy is an important part of the whole healthcare team at Northwell. From admission to discharge, we all work together to make decisions and provide the best care.”
Tara was especially drawn to Northwell because she knew it would give her the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with supportive leadership. “Northwell makes it possible to continue to learn and grow professionally and personally. There is a lot of support from colleagues and leaders, and I am proud of the team that we’ve built.”
Sophia Brutus, Pharmacy Supervisor
Sophia saw the positive impact Northwell has on people’s health and wanted to be part of a team that provides essential healthcare services.
“Becoming a pharmacist at Northwell has opened doors to more diverse career opportunities in both clinical and administrative roles within the healthcare field. It has allowed me to contribute to patient care and make a meaningful difference in our community.”
As a pharmacy supervisor, the most crucial aspect of Sophia’s role is patient safety, which includes counseling patients on proper medication use and maintaining a well-organized and compliant pharmacy. She enjoys the opportunity of leading a team, playing a pivotal role in patient care and engaging with a larger network, which keeps her constantly learning.
“Northwell has supported my professional development through training, mentorship and access to resources. I always feel supported because Northwell prioritizes employee growth and ensures we have the tools needed to excel in our roles.”

Michael Ufholz had many years of experience as a chef in the restaurant industry before joining our culinary team at Northwell Health in 2019. Today, as the executive sous chef at Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC) in Riverhead, New York, he takes pride helping to heal our patients in a different way—with food and nutrition.
When you think of hospitals, nutritious and restaurant-quality food may not be top of mind, but at Northwell, preparing delicious and healthy dishes for our patients is one of our highest priorities. At Northwell, we believe innovation is the key ingredient in promoting wellness and is essential to transforming the healthcare culinary experience for our patients and our team members.
Michael is proud of the work he does and the team he has built at PBMC. With a sense of devotion and passion in all that he does, Michael knows that creating a positive impact on each patient’s food experience is vital to his success. It is the positive impact on his patients and having the ability to improve their experience that led Michael to want to work for Northwell Health.
“If you’re ready to make meals from the heart, this is your place to be,” said Michael. “Food tastes better when it’s made from the heart, and that’s what Northwell’s culinary teams do.”
It all begins with the culinary team in the kitchen each day. Michael’s daily responsibilities include selecting the daily menu for our patients and providing training to our team members, such as teaching cooking techniques. Michael also assists in the management of the cafeteria and catering functions, in addition to preparing all food items appropriate for each meal including starters, entrees, side dishes and more.
Michael believes that making a good quality meal for patients is the most rewarding part of his job. For instance, if a patient is worried about an upcoming test or procedure, a meal prepared by Michael and Northwell’s culinary team can make them feel calmer and more at ease.
“I’m able to see firsthand the impact our culinary team has on our patients,” said Michael. “Our teams work hard to produce the best meals for our patients, and it truly pays off by making our patients happy.”
Michael loves that his current position with Northwell allows him to have a healthy work/life balance. When working in the restaurant industry, it was common for Michael to be at the restaurant into the late hours multiple days a week. Now at Northwell, Michael’s team works just as hard but with flexible shifts to ensure they have time to balance a full-time career with their families at home. This makes a huge difference in his life as he shares, “I used to feel like I lived at work and now I live to truly experience life.” With a flexible schedule, Michael believes Northwell has allowed him to have the opportunity to get even more crafty with his cooking — being creative with recipes that he could possibly add to PBMC’s menu.
Michael feels supported to grow and develop at Northwell. He also welcomes the camaraderie with his fellow culinary teams at our other hospitals with Northwell’s annual chef challenge competition, where each hospital’s culinary team competes to create a three-course-meal for a panel of judges.
These unique, team-focused opportunities provide Michael with learned disciplines, which help him be a better chef. He loves that his work environment at Northwell is more collaborative than any other work environment he’s ever been a part of before.

At Northwell, we express our culture authentically and we believe that our culture – and our organization – is ours to shape. Northwell’s Business Employee Resource Groups (BERGs) unite our team members and the communities we serve to help us continue creating a workplace where our employees feel welcome, united, respected, celebrated and included. As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the accomplishments and beautifully diverse cultures of our Hispanic and LatinX team members. We met with three members of our LatinX Bridges BERG, Christina Giordano, senior product services and management analyst; Lisa Velasco, principal of Digital IT&S strategic planning; and Luz A. Bove, MS, OTR/L, program manager for the division of infectious disease; to ask them about the importance of these programs and how the LatinX Bridges BERG has helped support their career at Northwell.
How has becoming a BERG member impacted your career journey at Northwell?
CG: Becoming an active member of the LatinX BERG has played a large part in my career growth. I have gained confidence in various skill sets, built my professional network and participated in mentorship programs that focus on accelerated career growth for members of our African American/Caribbean Bridges, LatinX Bridges and Asian Bridges BERGs.
LV: Being part of the LatinX BERG and other BERGs provides me with a different sense of community that I didn’t even realize I was missing in my professional life before I came here. My LatinX BERG family has provided me with such incredible support. They push me beyond my comfort zone(s) but also remain absolutely by my side, ready to jump in and help if I need anything.
LB: Upon joining the BERGs, I immediately found a space where I had the opportunity to use my skillset toward projects and initiatives that I am most passionate about. This has allowed me to work alongside our senior leadership team in representing Northwell within the communities we serve.
Tell us more about activities you participate in during Hispanic Heritage Month.
CG: Hispanic Heritage Month events include awareness sessions, to salsa dancing classes, to virtual fireside chats with successful leaders within and outside of Northwell.
LV: The LatinX BERG puts together extra-special programming during the month which I highly recommend to everyone. Throughout the month I pay attention to offerings outside of work, such as showing support for LatinX artists, businesses, etc. – and seeking out more Hispanic restaurants to visit during the month.
LB: During Hispanic Heritage Month, I enjoy all of the above but also find new books written by Latino/a authors to share with my children, opening up more opportunities for us to learn about our heritage together. I encourage everyone to take one of their existing interests this month and expand their experience to try something new because you might not know how you may have been influenced by Latino culture.
What is the theme of this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month and what does it mean to you?
CG: This year’s theme is Una Familia, Muchas Culturas (One Family, Many Cultures). This theme speaks not only to the BERGs, but it also speaks to Northwell as a whole. It encompasses the hope and dream for peace in this world where we truly are one family built from many cultures. It sends the important message to be kind to everyone, no matter who they are or where they are from.
LV: Una Familia, Muchas Culturas (One Family, Many Cultures) encourages belonging. Love and representation know no boundaries. All are worthy and all are welcome!
LB: To me, this year’s theme encompasses the rich diversity of our culture and how it is a testament to how each of us are one part of a much larger puzzle.

“I’m blown away by this event,” said Chef Burke. “Food is so important because it brings joy to people who may be in fear when they’re in the hospital. The word hospitality and hospital are one in the same so if we can up the [patient] experience of being in the hospital through food and nutrition, it really makes a whole lot of sense.” *
It was an exciting competition with the winners from Northern Westchester Hospital receiving an all-expenses paid trip to Napa Valley, including a visit to the Culinary Institute of America. The winning dishes comprised of a mushroom and farro risotto appetizer, main entrée of a filet of wild black cod and a mouth-watering dessert of Bing cherry and almond clafouti with a matcha and yogurt crème anglaise. Huntington Hospital placed second and in third place was Staten Island University Hospital, Prince’s Bay.

Michael Francesco, senior manager of operations at Vivo Health Pharmacy, had 20 years of experience as a pharmacy technician before joining Northwell’s Vivo Health Pharmacy in 2016. As a pharmacy technician, he performed data entry on newly received prescriptions, assisted with co-payments and requested prescription refills for patients. In 2018, Michael was promoted to lead pharmacy technician for Vivo Health’s Mail Order Pharmacy. There he was responsible for overseeing and training technicians at Vivo Health’s call center while assisting customers.
Michael’s career journey continued to thrive when he became a part of Vivo Health’s leadership team as an associate program manager in 2021., In this role, he focused on creating training materials for his team members, including user guides and manuals, while also assisting with onboarding new employees. One year later, Michael was promoted to manager of operations, responsible for Vivo Pharmacy computer system upgrades. In his current role, as a senior manager of operations at Vivo Health Pharmacy’s, Michael now leads the central services team, which includes pharmacy interns, float pharmacists and central processing team members, supporting every retail location across our health system.
