Jeffrey Pick’s career journey from patient care associate to senior director of triage clinical call center

Jeffrey Pick is not someone who turns down a new challenge. He sees it as an opportunity to grow your skills. It’s this determination and willingness to take his nursing career in new directions that has led to his successful career journey at Northwell Health — beginning as a patient care associate to where he is today, as the senior director of triage at the Clinical Call Center.

Jeff began his career journey at Northwell Health in 2005, when he learned about an opportunity to work as a patient care associate at Glen Cove Hospital. While at Glen Cove Hospital, he received his AAS and BSN nursing degrees through tuition support provided by Northwell. Following, Jeff was offered a registered nurse position by his nursing manager. “I am grateful that as a nursing student I was able to work as a patient care associate, which started my wonderful career,” says Jeff. “Not only does Northwell provide excellent growth opportunities, but they also provide classes, leadership programs and the support to become successful.” Jeff started as a registered nurse on the medical/surgical unit until he transferred to acute rehab in 2013.

In 2014, Jeff started his journey at the Clinical Call Center at Northwell Health as a registered nurse. Jeff’s inspiration to join the call center team came from previous experience. “I used to own a non-clinical call center in my first career before I was a nurse so when I saw the opportunity to work as a clinician in a call center, I was excited.” That’s why Jeff jumped at the opportunity to use his nursing skills in a call center setting. “I am so appreciative that Northwell has so many opportunities in so many different areas so anyone can do what they love.”

Today, Jeff is responsible for the triage team at the Clinical Call Center at Northwell Health. The triage registered nursing team assists patients by evaluating their health over the phone to provide medical guidance and helps find the appropriate immediate medical care. After evaluations, patients may be requested to seek medical attention pending the severity of their ailment.

Jeff oversees a team of managers, supervisors and staff that handle everything from call quality, speed to answer and call outcomes. He is also involved in the growth of new programs and contracts. Jeff shared, “I love being able to instill my ideas to make my department a better place to work for the team which in turn helps the patients we serve.”

Jeff is most proud that the Call Center is accredited as a Center of Excellence for providing outstanding triage services. According to Jeff, “The path to accreditation was a huge undertaking and challenge, but most rewarding when we were successful. This really shows we are meeting and exceeding the standards from the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch, demonstrating we are really taking great care of the patients we serve using evidence-based practice.”

When asked what advice he would give anyone looking to take the first step in their career, Jeff replied, “My advice is to be open minded and always keep learning. Take on new challenges and do not let fear hold you back. We all learn as we go so take the leap of faith and believe in yourself. You might fall along the way, but as long as you get up and learn, you will continue to grow in your role and be better off for it.”

What better way to get team members moving than Northwell’s annual walk challenge

What better way to get team members moving than Northwell’s annual walk challenge

One of the many ways Northwell Health focuses on its team members’ wellbeing is an annual walking challenge. In this year’s step challenge, 3,068 teams made up of 16,421 team members participated as they competed for the chance to win $5,000! The teams have six weeks to walk two million steps collectively (with six team members per team). Nine teams overall were selected – such as the Revenue All Stars and Valley Cats, among the rest — with each participant receiving a $5,000 prize.

Each year, the walk challenge, led by our Employee Wellness team, features a different destination to help team members learn more about different locations throughout the world with Asia as the 2023 destination for our walkers. Leveraging Northwell’s wellness app, team members can view and track their physical activity, while unlocking different destinations across Asia throughout their wellness journey. Northwell’s Asian Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) helped provide information around each destination, including the history and culture, in tandem with providing team members with various wellness facts to help align mind, body and soul.

“The Asian BERG was honored to partner with Employee Wellness to identify breathtaking natural sites across Asia. We hope these carefully picked destinations spark interest in exploring new cultures and cuisines,” says Himani Patel. “We are excited to come together again and challenge each other to continue to prioritize our health by walking each day. This is the kind of healthy competition we all need to close out the year!”

From walks outdoors during lunch to gathering with friends on days off, our teams found fun ways to get their steps in while gaining more exercise and energy, developing healthy habits and improving mental health. In addition, for our remote team members, it provides a unique chance to connect with their teammates despite the distance.

In addition to Northwell’s annual walk challenges, Northwell offers more than 80 workshops and wellness programs for our team members. These resources were designed to assist our team members with building healthy habits, managing stress, sleeping better, and planning self-care. It’s just a few more ways that we show our commitment and support for the physical and emotional health of our team members.

With so many team members competing in this year’s challenge, Northwell Health is ready for a journey to Asia and wellbeing.

The mission for Yovica Valentin: providing the best infant care at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

They say when you do something you love, it doesn’t feel like work at all. That feeling is something that holds true for Yovica Valentin, infant care technician at Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC). Yovica has always had a passion for working with children and infants. With her role at Northwell, she’s able to fulfill that passion while working hard to fulfill another dream of hers; becoming a registered nurse (RN).

Yovica started her time at Northwell in 2018, working at Flexstaff as a Certified Nursing Assistant, caring for adults. She always wanted to work with children so in July 2021 she was thrilled to start a new position at CCMC as a pediatric nursing assistant. In February 2022, she transitioned to an infant care technician in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at CCMC.

As an infant care technician, she takes vitals, changes diapers, consoles and cuddles, feeds and baths the infants who are under her care. While overseeing and reporting any abnormalities during care to the nurses, Yovica also monitors and assists with discharges. Other responsibilities include taking inventory of supplies in patient rooms, infant cribs, and the circumcision room. She also helps to send labs reports and picks up orders from the blood bank. Yovica is dedicated to her work with all the newborns and finds meaning as she helps them grow so they can go home healthy as they begin life with their families.

Before she began her healthcare career, Yovica enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in January 2020 and completed basic training in July 2020 before returning home to begin serving at the Air National Guard base in Westhampton, New York. Currently as an active member of the U.S. Air Force, Yovica is an airman first class (E3) and will soon be promoted to a senior airman.

The U.S. Air Force’s core values are integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do. Yovica carries and displays those values not just while serving in the military but also while working at CCMC and in her everyday life outside of work. “I have learned the importance of stepping up to the plate and helping my fellow airmen in order to accomplish the mission at hand,” says Yovica. Yovica also appreciates the support she has received throughout her Northwell career from her hiring leaders, team members and the Office of Military and Veterans’ Liaison Services.

Yovica’s next step on her career journey is to become a registered nurse so she can continue to make a difference and impact people’s lives by providing the next level of care as a nurse. She recently passed her board exams and is now officially a licensed RN. Yovica’s leaders supported her throughout her time in school by offering her a more flexible schedule to accommodate her studying. She feels encouraged by her leaders and colleagues, who are constantly pushing her to follow her dreams. She plans to continue to be active in the military to commission to an officer position and work with the medical group on base as a registered. Yovica also plans on moving up to a registered nurse position and continuing her career journey with Northwell.

Celebrating Medical Assistants Recognition Week at Northwell Health

Our medical assistant (MA) team members are an integral part of the patient experience. While assisting patients under the supervision of our physicians and nurses, our MA team members take the lead on multiple tasks for the patient from visit preparation to administering, obtaining and recording diagnostic laboratory test results to preparing and filing reports into a patient’s medical records. We interviewed a few of our amazing medical assistants — Natasha, Miriam and Cassandra — to discuss how their career and professional development has been supported at Northwell.

Tell us about your current role and what responsibilities you have as a medical assistant.

Cassandra Denis, Medical Assistant, Neurosurgery: I joined Northwell in 2020. Joining the Northwell team was one of the best transitions and accomplishments I made for my career. My responsibilities include assisting the clinicians and nurse practitioners by bringing patients to their exam rooms, checking blood pressure and reviewing their history and medications. I am also responsible for answering phone calls and booking appointments, scanning documents into patient charts and prepping for the next office hours.

Miriam Edwards, Senior Medical Assistant, Cardiology: I became part of the Northwell team when my office was acquired in 2008. As a medical assistant, I am responsible for preparing patients to meet with the cardiologist. This includes interviewing them to get their medical history, completing vitals and EKGs, completing stress tests, applying Holter monitors and acting as a patient navigator to help them through their visit.

Natasha Benn, Medical Assistant, General Pediatrics: I joined Northwell in 2012. As a medical assistant I assist providers in taking vitals, performing tests, prepping the room prior to a patient’s visit and disinfecting afterwards. I also scan and work on paperwork related to school, camp and medications forms and medical records, as well as work on administrative tasks.

How has your growth and development been supported by Northwell?

CD: Northwell has supported my growth and development in many ways. I am eager to learn from different departments while continuing to care for my patients with love, compassion and patience. Northwell has helped me grow my professional network and has given me the opportunity to cross train and learn so that I can grow as a medical assistant. Northwell always finds new ways to help their employees to progress in their career journey.

ME: Northwell has been excellent for career development. I feel supported in my goals, development, and work-life balance. I have even taken several classes to enhance my skills as a medical assistant.

NB: Northwell has given me opportunities to gain experience at other facilities and has given me opportunities to learn. I am now more aware and capable in dealing with difficult scenarios and situations when it comes to the health and care of our patients.

What do you love about your job at Northwell?

CD: What I love about Northwell and the department that I work for is that we are like a family. We treat each other with the utmost respect. My team is always willing to help each other through stressful times and find ways to do our best to make sure our patients leave their appointments happy and informed.

ME: Northwell has a great team atmosphere where I feel supported by the doctors and my team members. We each bring something different to the table and all come together to provide the best patient care.

NB: As Northwell team members we have opportunities to gain experience, information and knowledge by taking on different roles. I also love the diversity and culture that we are exposed to.

What do you think about when you hear “Medical Assistants Recognition Week?”

CD: I think about the love and appreciation the medical assistant team members will be shown for our dedication and hard work toward our patients and their needs. I see it as a week where we will be recognized for all that we do and a great way for others to learn more about the position and what we do on a daily basis.

ME: I’m extremely excited about Medical Assistants Recognition Week. It fills me with pride to know that I work with an organization and team that shows appreciation for my hard work. I feel a sense of pride and belonging, which further ignites my drive to bring my best every day!

NB: Medical Assistants Recognition Week is a time for appreciating the efforts and hard work a team member has contributed to their role for their team, patient and site. The week is about how their dedication and zeal affected a patient, team member, workflow, or environment in a positive way. The week also makes me think about the hard work that doesn’t go unnoticed. It makes us feel heard, seen and valued. Everything that we do when we go above and beyond overall seems worth it; though we don’t necessarily do it to be recognized, but we do it because we want to and we love what we do.

Meet Christina Cheripuram, director of social work services at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Christina’s dedication to providing patients and their families with the best care has led to her successful career journey at Northwell.

Christina’s career history is deeply rooted at Northwell Health. She began as a social worker in 2005, and was promoted to a senior social worker in 2011. She then joined Northwell’s telepsychiatry team in 2016 as a behavioral telehealth care manager, and in 2017, she joined the transplant team as a living donor social worker and living donor advocate. With Christina’s experience and dedication, she advanced to a senior manager at North Shore University Hospital in 2020, and in 2022, to her current role as director of social work services at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC). We connected with Christina to hear more about her story in her own words.

When did your career journey start at Northwell?

I joined Northwell 20 years ago, after completing a year as a social work student intern. After graduation, I gained first-hand knowledge and experience on what it meant to be a hospital social worker. I worked with ICU patients on telemetry/medicine units, offering much needed support and collaborating with the interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe discharges and patient/family satisfaction. I enjoyed working in the hospital, facilitating complex discharge plans and being present for patients and families.

Tell us what attracted you to Northwell.

I was drawn to Northwell because of the collaborative work environment and continued education, training and professional development the organization provides that helps you succeed in any role. I enjoy working with patients and being a part of a multidisciplinary team. Working as a social worker, I felt appreciated by my colleagues and I recognized that it was a privilege to witness and offer support and guidance to patients and families during some of the most challenging and precious moments in their lives.

How has your growth and development been supported by Northwell?

Northwell provides a very wide array of career opportunities and pursuing those opportunities has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally. This has given me the opportunity to do what I love, think outside the box, and hold myself to a high standard.

What do you love most about working as director of social work services at Northwell?

As the director of social work at Northwell’s LIJMC, I love having the opportunity to hear from my team and utilize their feedback and suggestions to create positive change and process improvement within the department that can also lead to enhanced patient care. As a social worker at Northwell, you’re able to provide ongoing patient advocacy, supporting positive patient experiences, providing safe discharge plans, and ensuring a seamless transition for our patients across the continuum of care.

What advice do you have for those starting their career?

I would encourage all social workers to make the most of every day, and to seek the opportunities to be recognized. Northwell offers multiple resource tools and mentorship programs to help guide you in your career growth.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am proud that my career journey over the years has stayed within the Northwell organization. I have been impacted by so many people along the way, some who have become mentors to me, and all of them have played a part in teaching me and shaping who I am now. In addition, I’m proud of building leadership skills and working side by side with the social workers to support their efforts working with patients and families, as well as supporting the business goals of the organization. I don’t believe another organization could have offered the same level of career growth and support that Northwell has.

Providing the Foundation for Success for Care Coordination Professionals

Our registered nurse case managers and social workers have unique access to our dedicated education team who provide one-of-a-kind effective training programs from onboarding orientation to leadership education to give our team members the foundation they need for continued growth and development. With continued education and training, our RN case managers and social workers have the skills and tools they need beyond the bedside to succeed in their roles within the care coordination field of practice.

These education professional, leverage their experience and backgrounds to create education and training programs that enable our Care Coordination team members to develop and grow their careers.

Our Care Coordination educators develop and create the following training and education programs for registered nurses and licensed social workers to succeed in their roles:

Orientation and onboarding of new team members
Development of independent learning, self-study programs in conjunction with instructor-led classes
Curriculum development for new case managers, social workers, leaders, and support staff
Continuing education programs for all team members with speakers on specific topics
Access to various tools and resources to support ongoing learning

Through these programs, RN case managers and social workers become advocates for their patients so they are always well prepared to find a solution and treatment option that best works for each situation so patients can heal.

Caryn Stapler, RN, MBA, CCM, says, “We provide a solid standardized program and foundations for success for new hires and every Care Coordination team member across all our (inpatient) sites.” After a career in financial services for more than 20 years, Caryn went back to school to earn a nursing degree before starting at Northwell in 2008 as a registered nurse in Telemetry. She worked as a patient experience coordinator, case manager and today, Caryn is a clinical professional development educator for our Care Coordination team who creates new education programs for registered nurse case managers.

Our Care Coordination education team provides support to our frontline team members. They develop curriculums and schedules for key learning areas within the division for registered nurses, and also develop our mentorship program for rising leaders within Care Coordination. As Northwell continues to evolve and expand, our nurse educators also oversee education affiliation and student programs within the discipline. Heather Gordon, RN, BSN, CCM, clinical professional development educator, is currently involved in a new preliminary initiative that will provide nursing students with experience and exposure in the field of case management. “The education team works collaboratively with unique skill sets and experienced nurses to expand and meet the needs of the care coordination strategic initiatives,” says Heather. Heather’s career history is deeply rooted at Northwell Health. She started at as a nursing assistant, then became a registered nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit. From there, Heather became a case manager in 2007 at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. With Heather’s vast experience and dedication, this position lead to her promotion as director of case management and social work in 2019 and then to her current role.

Providing care coordination to those needing assistance requires dedication and drive. Zairia Finch, LCSW-R, MS, advisor, social work services, is responsible for the development and implementation of educational programs and opportunities for our social workers at Northwell Health. Zairia leads the creation of orientation material and competencies, oversees continuing education, provides ongoing learning, and partners collaboratively with other disciplines outside of Social Work Services to further develop interdisciplinary approaches to care. She works to incorporate best practices and innovative solutions to social work specific areas of practice.

Zairia’s social work experience brought her to Northwell eight years ago. “Being a champion of social work and being able to build the social work services education programs, I can see the impact we have on our team members across the health system in providing them with additional education and training,” says Zairia. This exceptional educational training enables social workers to perform their best and succeed within our care settings. In addition, Zairia supports the highly successful MSW Student Program throughout Northwell.

Reflecting on Hispanic Heritage Month and a Truly Inclusive Culture

At Northwell, we strive to create a diverse and inclusive work environment, where our team members are celebrated and respected. National Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 to October 15–it’s a time when we commemorate the accomplishments, contributions and culture of our Hispanic and LatinX team members.

The Northwell Business Employee Resource Groups (BERGs) connect our team members and the communities we serve to create a unified workplace where our employees feel welcome and included. We interviewed BERG Co-chair Dora SantaMaria-Yao, senior director of organizational change management, and BERG Executive Coordinator Lucy Lemus, associate product services and management analyst, to ask them about the upcoming month, the importance of the LatinX BERG, and how their career at Northwell has been supported by the BERG.

Tell us about your career journey in healthcare.

Dora SantaMaria-Yao: I was a 17-year-old high school graduate who had just immigrated from Guatemala. I was looking for a job and found one that required a Spanish speaker. I quickly realized I had a passion for helping patients. I continued that journey for a few years. Later, I continued my college education and got a job at a surgical practice where I grew from a clerk to a multiple practice administrator. I was attracted to Northwell because I wanted to be part of something bigger. As senior director of organizational change management, I oversee change management activities for revenue cycle. The main objective of my team is to focus on the people side of change to ensure success. We also work closely with the project management team for a comprehensive and consolidated delivery of high quality projects.

Lucy Lemus: I came to Northwell two years ago from a career in change management, re-engineering processes, procurement, and urban geospatial analysis across an array of industries. Everywhere I went I would see Northwell facilities, and I took it as a sign. When a friend of mine who works at Northwell told me how grateful she is to be a part of such an amazing organization, I quickly jumped at the opportunity to become a team member too. My role is non-clinical, but I have learned so much about this field and the different aspects of it. As an associate product services and management analyst, my role is to work with my team on the implementation of new solutions and processes for identified business needs, while supporting our end users to adapt to change.

How has becoming a BERG member impacted your career journey at Northwell?

DS: I think it’s important for team members to find a place of cultural belonging, where shared passions can be fueled between our community and colleagues. The LatinX BERG has become my extended family and I’m so grateful to be part of it. I am currently one of the co-chairs for the BERG. The relationships and friendships I have made through the BERGs are precious to me. It has given me a deeper perspective about the organization and our mission and I’m extremely proud of the work we have done together.

LL: It is important to have BERGs that stay true to Northwell’s value of Truly Inclusive and celebrate diversity while fostering a sense of belonging for all team members. Joining a BERG as a new team member at Northwell has provided me with the opportunity to get to know what the organization is about, meet amazing people, and advance my professional development. I am now the executive coordinator of the LatinX BERG, and I can see the positive impact of the BERGs in the organization.

What do you think about when you hear “Hispanic Heritage Month?”

DS: As an immigrant many years ago, Hispanic Heritage Month was a foreign concept to me. I grew up celebrating “Día de la Hispanidad” which is celebrated in the United States as Columbus Day. As my horizons broadened, I started to appreciate the incredible contribution that Hispanics and LatinX have made to this country. I think of the sacrifices and examples from those who have set a path for us today. I think about their struggles and I’m so grateful to get to celebrate it.

LL: I am so proud of my heritage. Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on our rich and vibrant culture, traditions and contributions. I know the holiday is only a month, but we should celebrate who we are every day.

What is the theme of this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month and what does it mean to you?

DS: The theme for 2022 is: “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” As Hispanics, we come from so many different countries with our own culture, food, music and dialects, which can sometimes separate us. We are UNIDOS; we are all Hispanic and together we make for a stronger nation.

LL: The theme for Hispanic Heritage this year is Unity. The theme speaks to our core values, strength, resilience and remembering there is nothing we cannot accomplish together.

The LatinX BERG has a month-long agenda for Hispanic Heritage Month packed with relevant and timely content. Starting with a Hispanic Heritage Month kickoff event on September 15 with guest speaker Dr. Nicolas Hernandez, associate program director, this month-long celebration includes a fireside chat, a LatinX Salsa hour and more. Northwell Health will be holding local celebrations at select facilities during Hispanic Heritage Month.

With a passion for caring and continued growth, meet Certified Surgical Technologist, Jason Dizon

Meet Jason Dizon, certified surgical technologist at Plainview Hospital. Jason’s passion for learning helps him grow and succeed in his career journey at Northwell.

As a certified surgical technologist, Jason works in the operating room where he sets up for each surgical procedure, assists the operating room team, and maintains the sterility of the instruments to ensure patient safety. Working alongside our surgeons and the surgical team, Jason is constantly learning new things that will provide superior care for his patients. Since Plainview is also a teaching hospital, Jason has opportunities to teach students who are in school to become certified surgical technologists.

Jason is proud to be a part of a dynamic work environment with state-of-the-art surgical equipment. Since joining Northwell in 2015, he tries to make a difference every day for his patients with the support of his team members. “I love that my work enables me to help people,” he says. “The team I work with supports me and makes me better every day.”

With his passion for caring, learning new things and supportive encouragement from his managers, Jason is now looking to pursue a nursing career in the next step of his journey with the financial support of tuition reimbursement from Northwell. “I’m excited about the future and the prospect of becoming an OR nurse, as my management team fully supports me going back to school.”

When asked what advice he has for those looking to start a career as a surgical technologist, Jason shared, “Know that we do not just pass instruments to the surgeon. We help make our patients feel better and improve their quality of life, which is why I love my job.”

Northwell interns thrive in a collaborative environment supported by leadership

At Northwell Health, we are proud to provide internship programs which promote high growth careers in both clinical and non-clinical professions. Our vast internship opportunities include administration, hospitality, information technology (IT), revenue cycle, and more.

We had the opportunity to speak with some of Northwell’s past IT interns about their journey to a full-time career at Northwell. Our Information Technology & Services (IT&S) team plays a critical role in our ability to deliver exceptional care for our patients and our community. Through our IT Internship program, student interns can prepare for success as an IT professional, while playing a key role in helping us advance IT solutions in strategic planning, deployment, coordination, and integration throughout our organization.

Meet some team members whose career journeys started from our IT Internship program.

Giovanni Ocampo, Senior Infrastructure Services and Management Engineer

Giovanni’s career journey began with Northwell in 2017, when he joined us as a summer intern for the IT security department. During his internship, he was inspired by the encouragement he received from management to pursue his current role within our cellular department as a senior infrastructure services and management engineer, supporting cellular/corporate lines and radio/network router projects.

Today, Giovanni has many accomplishments to be proud of. One of which was the company-wide deployment of our mobile device management (MDM) system, in which securely connected mobile devices (such as smartphones and tablets) are provided for use throughout the health system. “I love the teamwork that occurs on big projects at Northwell,” says Giovanni. “We work with so many different teams and departments and to see all of us come together to reach an end goal successfully is truly amazing.”

Rebecca Logan, Project Manager, Departmental Clinical Solutions

Since she started as an IT project associate intern in 2017, Rebecca shared that she was drawn to Northwell because she knew it would give her the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with supportive leadership.

Today, Rebecca is a project manager on the clinical solutions team, implementing surgical information systems at Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. Since the start of this assignment, Rebecca has gained more confidence in her ability to tackle challenges and find solutions because she is constantly learning and growing within her role. Once completed, Rebecca is eager to take on more of these complex projects. “I really enjoy that every day is different and that my leaders have always helped me reach my goals.” She also added, “I believe it is very important to be transparent and persistent about your goals throughout your career journey, but also to recognize that teamwork truly makes the dream work.”

Adrian La Rosa, Associate Project Manager, Ancillary Clinicals Service Line

Adrian joined Northwell in 2016 as an intern for the project management office which led him to a full-time position that same year, as a project administrator. He takes pride in his career growth at Northwell and has found his success stems from a supportive management team that helps guide him to learn the industry and move forward in his career.

Now as an associate project manager for the ancillary clinicals service line, he is working on a project to install new ultrasounds at Lenox Hill Hospital in the NICU department. Adrian is looking forward to ongoing opportunities and additional education in the workplace he loves. “Northwell has set me up for success by providing me with a path to further my education, gain hands-on experience, and be supported by leadership so I can achieve any goal I set for myself.” Adrian looks forward to his future at Northwell that encourages creativity.
