At Northwell, we recognize that military veterans bring a wealth of experience, discipline and leadership to the workplace. Kevin Vargas-Colon, a former U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Corporal and combat veteran, has transitioned from military life to a rewarding civilian career at Northwell. Now as a registered nurse at Northwell’s South Oaks Hospital, Kevin continues to make a meaningful impact as part of our team—this time, in the field of behavioral health.
In his role, Kevin provides compassionate care and support to his patients’ physical and emotional well-being while collaborating with physicians and other team members in coordinating and implementing procedures and treatments. He also participates in patient and family education and uses leadership skills and clinical judgment in coordinating patient care and delegating activities of the patient care unit team.
Kevin spent eight years (2000-2008) in the Marine Corps Reserve as a field radio operator, deploying to Iraq in 2003 and again from 2004-2005. His service instilled in him a strong sense of duty, resilience, and commitment—qualities that now guide him in his role as a behavioral health registered nurse. “The opportunity to have a positive effect on the progress of a patient’s care is what excites me most about my role at Northwell,” he shares.
While transitioning from military to civilian life, Kevin found that many of the skills he developed in the Marines translated seamlessly into his work. As a combat veteran with past experiences, he is able to connect more with his patients who are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma and other issues. “Northwell has made me feel welcome and valued as both a veteran and a nurse,” he shared. “My military experience and experience as a veteran advocate working with those who’ve struggled with self-destructive behavior have assisted me in connecting with our patients.”
Since joining Northwell nearly two years ago, Kevin has seen firsthand how the organization supports veterans through assistance with claims, provider services, community outreach efforts, employment opportunities and our VALOR BERG (Business Employee Resource Group). He took part in the Nurse Residency Program, which supports new nurses as they transition into practice. He also values Northwell’s Military Liaison Services department, who actively engage with the veteran community by providing educational and mental health resources and career training programs. For veterans considering a career at Northwell, Kevin says, “The opportunities in health care are plentiful. If you’re looking to continue your professional growth, Northwell is a great place to do so.”
Northwell Health is proud to support veterans like Kevin, with job search training, veteran-friendly transition programs, health and wellness services, MOS code job search and other resources make it even easier for veterans and active service members to find successful careers with us.
